new choosing my word for the new year

Ah, here it is. That post you’ve read on a thousand different blogs as we catapult off of 2015 to launch into the brand-spankin’ new 2016.

I’m no different from the rest. For me, a new year is always imbued with a sense of hope. And New Year’s Resolutions are always a little bit… well, dangerous. Because setting goals that are too high, or beyond my control, can lead to depression when I check in on them if I didn’t manage to achieve them. I think I’ve done better this year and chosen things that are within my control.

I like what I’ve seen many people do and choose a word to guide them in the new year. A word that embodies what they want the year to be.

For me, that word is: “New”

happynewyearI want 2016 to include…

New

experiences and chances. Maybe this will be dating. Maybe it will mean accepting an invitation that I wouldn’t have before. Maybe I’ll try some new food, find a sort of ~different Groupon or LivingSocial experience. I don’t know. But I’m excited to find out.

New

backbone. I want to speak up more when something bothers me.

New

health. This isn’t so much a New Year’s Resolution as a “getting back on track” resolution. If I wobble a bit throughout the year, that’s fine. I’m hardly going to give up some of my favorite things in the world like pizza and cake, but I’d like to cut back on soda and eat normal, healthy portions without going overboard, as well as getting back to regular exercise.

New

books– both read and written. 2016 will bring many great books from many great authors. For me, I want to publish Fall of Thrones and Thorns (the third and final book of the Threats of Sky and Sea series), one last short story prequel to the series, and at least one other novel– though I haven’t decided which project calls my name more.

New

work and places. I’ve told you that I’ve branched out into Patreon and audiobook narration, and here’s hoping 2016 brings even more exciting stuff.

I also want to travel to at least two places that I’ve never been before, and, as you can see from the map below, I have plenty of choices. Tennessee, Massachusetts, Texas, Louisiana, among the rest… and that’s just the U.S.

So, those are my hopes. My plans.

What do you want your 2016 to bring?
