While I was writing the Threats of Sky and Sea series, I tried to steer clear of worlds and plots that I thought may hold a few too many similarities to mine. I avoided some books that held a great deal of temptation for me—in other words, I’ve missed out on a few Elemental fantasies.
There were a few exceptions that I did manage to read. Some books and series introduced their… erm… Elemental ~elements~ later in the books/series when I was already hooked and couldn’t give them up, or I was assured by my critique partners, who had already read the work that the world and systems of magic were different enough from the Threats of Sky and Sea series that my writing wouldn’t be overly influenced.
So, now that Fall of Thrones and Thorns is released and the trilogy concluded, my friend Bonnie over at A Backwards Story deemed this period of time my “Elemental Catch-up.”
Here’s what’s on my Elemental Catch-up list!
(Note: my tastes skew toward high fantasy rather than stories set more in our world, so I’ve intentionally left some stories that have a more ~paranormal bend to them off of the list.)
Air Awakens by Elise Kova
Troubled Waters by Sharon Shinn
The Burning Sky by Sherry Thomas
Falling Kingdoms by Morgan Rhodes
I’ve already read (and recommend!):
Truthwitch by Susan Dennard
The Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo
The Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas
Let me know in the comments if you have any Elemental fantasy recommendations!
And, of course, if you have any friends who are playing elemental catch-up, let them know that the Threats series is complete– and that book 1 is still $0.99 for 2 more days!
