Developing a cover for Over Raging Tides

Posted July 9, 2018 by Jennifer Ellision in Author business, blog / 0 Comments

As you may know, I’ve had the idea for Over Raging Tides for a long time.

So much time, in fact, that I’ve had plenty of time to think over what I wanted out of developing a cover for it. I knew that I wanted both a ship and a feminine representation. The book was, after all about female pirates.

Developing a cover on my own

I tried developing a cover myself in my free time years and years ago by buying a couple of stock photos and tinkering in Photoshop.

This is what I came up with when left to my own devices:

And… you know, I actually liked it! The concept anyway.

But I quickly realized that developing a cover for Over Raging Tides was outside of my skill set. Especially as I decided I was leaning towards developing a cover in a more illustrative style. If photo manipulation was beyond the pale for me, illustrating a cover definitely was!

I’d had my eye on Jenny of Seedlings Design Studio for a long while and loved her covers, especially her YA illustrated ones. I reached out to her to see if she’d be interested in developing a cover for Over Raging Tides and working with me.

Happily, she agreed to be my cover artist!

After signing a contract and paying a deposit, I secured my spot in her schedule. And when the time came, Jenny asked what I was thinking! I gave her a vague idea of the cover concept and we discussed an illustrative design and colors. Then, I attached the above mock-up and my Pinterest mood board for the series. After that, I left her to ~percolate.

Jenny e-mailed me later with one of the of the coolest tools I’ve ever seen while developing a cover with an artist: Image boards.

This is just one example of the image boards Jenny sent me while developing a cover for Over Raging Tides. She also included pages in the pdf she sent me with font possibilities and other covers that we could create similar concepts to.

I gave her my feedback on all of the concepts, told her my favorites, and let her take the wheel!

What she returned was beyond my wildest dreams:

Do you have any questions about developing a cover or working with a cover artist? I can try to answer them!

Fall of Thrones and Thorns COVER REVEAL!

It’s been almost a year since Riot of Storm and Smoke, book 2 in the Threats of Sky and Sea series, was released.

Since then, I’ve been working like crazy on Fall of Thrones and Thorns– the third and final novel in the series.

I’m so pleased to be able to say that it will be released September 27, 2016!

Are you ready for the Fall of Thrones and Thorns cover reveal?

Without further ado…

Here is the Fall of Thrones and Thorns cover!

Fall of Thrones and Thorns cover Jennifer Ellision Threats of Sky and Sea

About Fall of Thrones and Thorns:

War hurtles in, a typhoon over the sea.

After Bree’s life was torn apart, Nereidium had represented a haven to her. A place that—if she could save it—was beyond the King’s reach.

And, at last, she’s arrived upon its shores. But things in Nereidium are not what they should be.

The land is plagued by a rash of mysterious earthquakes, the likes of which it’s never known. The governors are distracted by old traditions, while Bree and her friends grapple with changing identities and the sense that the longer they wait to take action… the greater the danger from Egria grows.

Bree is tired of living under the shadow of King Langdon’s power. And she’s tired of waiting for him to be the first to act.

In this final chapter of the Threats of Sky and Sea series, it all comes down to Nereidium or Egria. To Bree or the King. It’s kill… or be killed.

And not everyone will escape the battle unscathed.

What do you guys think of the Fall of Thrones and Thorns cover?! I’m so pumped for this final chapter of Bree’s story and I hope that you are too!

Rip Van Winkle-ing

Rip Van Winkle-ing

You guys. What year is it? What day?

Just kidding, I know all of that, but with the activity around the past couple of weeks, I’ve barely used the internet. I feel a little like Rip Van Winkle, waking up after twenty years.

That’s because last week, I visited my best friend in Virginia. She and her fiance (who is also an friend from college), both graduated with their master’s degrees and decided to celebrate that, as well as their engagement with a party. It worked out to be something of a college reunion, and was a great time all around. While I was there, we also went to Top Golf (please build one in South Florida, powers that be) and visited a winery, which was fun despite the fact that I don’t drink wine ^_~.

I was pretty sad to leave such good friends (and a respite from the heat!) behind, but as Christmas (which is what I celebrate) was approaching, I had to head back home, with a cold in tow, but nothing too crazy.

Izzy is doing much better, for which we’re all very grateful. My parents, the dogs, and I had a pretty quiet Christmas, but it was enjoyable nonetheless! Last year, our house was packed with 2 dogs, my parents, brother and I, my grandparents, aunt, uncle, and 3 cousins sleeping under the same roof. This year, my brother lives out in Colorado and the rest of the family couldn’t make the trip from North Carolina.

So the parents and I went to church on Christmas Eve, and then had dinner at a family friend’s. We had a relaxing Christmas morning. We opened gifts. (Some of my favorites are in the collage below). We Facetimed my brother. We went to Buca di Beppo and ate our weight in Italian deliciousness, and then came home and watched a movie. A different Christmas from what we’re used to, but a good one.

And now, today, I’m getting back into the swing of things. I’ll be taking over the YA Book Lovers Winter Party at 4 PM EST. The event itself starts at 1:30, and there will be a ton of great giveaways and authors participating.

Other than that, I’m working on fulfilling my Patreon patron perks, and working on finishing production on an audiobook–my cold’s been fought back enough to get back to work on it, but not quite enough to put in the long hours I’d like to.

And, of course, I’m excited for Breathe In‘s release tomorrow! If you’ve pre-ordered, it will be on your Kindle shortly! And if not, feel free to jump on it! I’ll see you guys back here for a release day blog tomorrow. Consider Rip Van Winkle awake– alive and kicking. ^_~

Cover reveal sign-ups and official release date for RIOT OF STORM AND SMOKE

GUYS. I am so very, very, very excited. Because finally, at long last, I’m at a point with Riot of Storm and Smoke that I feel comfortable setting a publication date. It has been far too long since I published Threats of Sky and Sea, and I’m sure you’re all wondering what in the hell happened to Bree and her friends, right? ^_~ Well, the wait isn’t too much longer, because… Riot of Storm and Smoke will be published August 18, 2015! (But you can add it on Goodreads now) Why did it take so long to announce an official release date? The truth is that I’m a slow writer… it takes me a loooong time to even find the story in all of my pantsing-style drafting. But we’re there now, and this is for real. I’ve reserved a slot with my […]

My first school visit

My first school visit

Last week, I had the pleasure of attending a high school book club, where the club read Threats of Sky and Sea this month. Equal parts nervous and elated, I left Day Job early and pulled up to a place that I don’t think I’ve been to since 2006– when I graduated from there. This was my first school visit and I tried to disregard the surrealism of the situation– along with the urge to cry out that “I DON’T EVEN GO HERE.” Not someone who is innately comfortable with attention, I was pretty dang nervous, but the informal setting quickly helped me relax. I’d estimate that about 20 students attended. We pulled together chairs in a loose circle around a table, and let the questions fly.   The school visit was off, and moving fast. A lot of questions that […]

Announcing the Threats of Sky and Sea audiobook!

Announcing the Threats of Sky and Sea audiobook!

Okay, first, the bad news: I am entirely unsure when Riot of Storm and Smoke will be available. In retrospect, I should have anticipated it would be longer than my target date of December.  Threats of Sky and Sea took me a good year and a half-two years to write, revise, and edit. It was foolish to think that I could whittle the time frame down so drastically for Riot of Storm and Smoke, especially as it still needs to go through editing, formatting, etc., etc. But it is coming.  I’ll get you an official date as soon as humanly possible. But let’s get to the good part of this post. Threats of Sky and Sea is coming to a set of earbuds near you! …That is, as February 10, 2015, Threats of Sky and Sea will be an audiobook, narrated by Misty Daugherty! You can […]

Turning a profit

Turning a profit

I have waited quite a few moons to be able to make this post– but this month has finally done it. Threats of Sky and Sea is finally earning a profit! (All you need for my emotions here are 0:20-026) Wait, what do you mean it’s earning a profit? You’ve sold books before now, right? Yes, thankfully I have! But between cover design, formatting, editing, and publicity, I tossed a good chunk of change into making Threats of Sky and Sea a success… roughly $2,000 worth. Though I released in May, it’s only now that I’m starting to actually profit, meaning I’ve earned back the money that I’ve invested. I expected that, and knew I was in this for the long haul, but man, it feels good to be officially earning from my writing. I’ve always found posts from fellow self-publishers regarding their […]

August Goals

August Goals

My birthday is August 29th, and I really want to give myself a couple of presents this year! As this day job’s “new” status fades, I’m finding myself better at balancing things again. Don’t get me wrong– I’m still WAY busy, but I’m adapting to things, which means I’m a little less exhausted, and that I’m once again finding ways to squeeze author business into my spare time (lunch hours, right before bed, weekend, et cetera). And because I can get stuff accomplished again, I’m setting myself some goals. The first three are big ones:  1) Finish this draft of Riot of Storm and Smoke. I’ve been saying it for ages, but it MUST happen this month if I want to meet my self-imposed publication month (December). Elsewise, I’m looking at pushing back my date and I HATE that idea. 2) Do […]
