Homecoming

As I so often do, last weekend, I journeyed to Orlando, home to my alma mater. Although this time, it was for Homecoming.

Homecoming as an alumna is (not unexpectedly) an altogether different experience from homecoming as a college student.

For one thing, Homecoming at UCF is a competition. It’s not just students concentrating on one football game and hoping that the team emerges victorious. Instead, the whole week is rife with events like Philanthropy Knight or Skit Knight.

As a student, I was INTO Homecoming. I loved it. I tried to participate in every event possible with my sorority; helped write the skits and performed in them. The night before the game, participating organizations had to build a float for the Homecoming parade. I stayed up until the wee hours of the morning, helping to build our float, caught a couple hours of sleep, and then had to be back there to be on the float. And I loved it.

(Since we’re doing the flashback thing, this was my last homecoming skit as a student. I’m “Alice”)

As an alumna, homecoming has a much more NOSTALGIC factor. Seeing old friends, talking about old memories… it was nice in a quieter sort of way. I hung out at a tailgate with them and marveled at how many unfamiliar faces there were in “our” area. I once would have known them all. And walking on campus was sort of surreal. So much is the same that it was like stepping through a time warp. And yet, there are little changes that make it hard to forget how long it’s been.

Still, I had a wonderful time staying with one of my best friends/old roommates and seeing so many of my old friends that I don’t get to see nearly enough.

Fun tailgating times!

I had such a great time, that in a couple of weeks, I’m going back– and this time I’m actually going to a football game too!

November, November.

How is it possible that we’re in November already?

It seems like New Year’s was last month; like BEA was last week; like my trip to Virginia and D.C. to see the BFF was yesterday. And even that was already two months ago.

October was a pretty calm month. I elected not to do much in the way of Halloween– I didn’t relish the idea of going out on a Thursday when I still needed to be at the office by 9 A.M. No costumes this year! My one concession to the Halloween season (besides the candy. So. Much. Candy.) was an afternoon spent carving pumpkins with my friends.

Alas, art is not my calling. My pumpkin was supposed to be a graveyard scene. But my pumpkin wound up with a very odd sort of… face instead.

My adventures in exercise continued in October as I joined a secondary gym in order to take morning spin classes with a friend. The first couple were extremely rough as I had to wake up at 4:30 AM, but it’s getting easier. I like that it makes me more likely to wake up a little earlier on days when I’m NOT spinning, so that I’m not in such a rush to get ready.

And now it’s November! It’s so hard to believe when the weather still allows me to spend comfortable days by the pool with my friends.

poolYet, the holiday commercials and music are starting right on cue! Not that I’m complaining– Holiday season is my favorite time of year.

This is the first year that I began attempting to do NaNoWriMo while holding a full-time job. It’s been much harder than I expected, and I don’t actually anticipate that I’ll finish with another win under my belt. But I’m okay with that. My schedule is so different that it used to be– I leave my house at 8 A.M. and don’t get home until about 7:30 P.M.  I’m asleep by 9:30 a lot of nights.

I’m not giving up on NaNo entirely– but I do think 50,000 is a little much for me right now. I’m still seizing it as a chance to begin work on my tentatively titled work in progress Hoist the Colors. Some words are better than no words and it’s such a MOTIVATING month for me. I love doing word sprints with others. The sense of community is inspiring! ^^

Anyone else doing relaxowrimo like me? How were your Halloweens? The starts to your holiday seasons?

3 places in about 3 days

A few weekends ago, I visited my best friend and her boyfriend for the first time since they moved out of Florida. I had to keep my trip pretty short since we all have only so much time that we can take off of work, but I had such a great time! I basically traveled to Virginia, D.C., and Maryland in about 3 days.

I arrived in Virginia on Thursday night, and on Friday morning, I woke up prepared for my first trip to Washington D.C.! The leaves were just starting to change colors, and I was excited that fall was starting to inch its way in. We don’t really have seasons in Florida, unless you count Hot (spring), Scorching and Humid with a chance of STORMS (summer), Pretty Dang Warm (fall), and Downright Pleasant (winter). Suffice to say, I was determined to rock a scarf. I stayed in Virginia, played tourist in D.C. and went hiking in Maryland, and flew out on Sunday night.

And now… for a picture spam in no particular order.

I do regret the fact that I wasn’t able to take pictures during my visit to the Spy Museum– because instead of doing the Museum THANG there, we chose a spy “experience” and went on a “mission” for an hour! So much fun! Grown-ups don’t get to play pretend nearly often enough and it was so much fun! (My “cover name” was Lina– I’m sure this is a shock to those of you who know me from my fanfiction days 😉 )

I had the best time! I’m looking forward to visiting the BFF again. Hopefully during the cherry blossom festival next year!

I put the pro in procrastinate

I’m using this post to stall for time. Which is to say that I’m delaying the things that I know I should be doing instead. Thing #1- Going to the gym to work on week 3 of Couch to 5K.  Which feels just short of impossible… but yeah. I’m going. I swear. As soon as my phone has enough of a charge to last for 30 minutes of music because doing that without it also feels just short of impossible Thing #2- Writing. Because I’ve been blocked on my work in progress for probably around a month and I’m just trying to squeeze the words out right now. I was going with the NaNoWriMo method of 1,667 words a day, but have been less than successful. Also I’m writing a fantasy novel and I just finished reading BITTERBLUE which was awesome […]

Jen on Jen action… by which I mean I talk about myself.

Jen on Jen action… by which I mean I talk about myself.

So. Some things about me/this space/why it’s here. 1) I already have a blog, but starting one that isn’t almost entirely devoted to Young Adult book reviews like Almost Grown-up is seemed like a fun idea. I’m following the example of fellow writer/book blogger Lindsey of Lindsey with an E and Storm of Words. 2) I have no idea how often I’m going to post on here or what I’m going to post about, really. 3) My life is consumed by books. In EVERY form. I’m working on my own novel now, having written two terrible ones before for NaNoWriMo. I’m part of a book club. I mentioned the book blog thing already… And I’m also an intern with a literary development company and an intern for a literary agent. 4) …But I’m basically unemployed right now. 5) I’m hoping […]
