It is the first day of November and so… NaNoWriMo begins

Posted November 1, 2017 by Jennifer Ellision in blog, Writing / 0 Comments

Happy November, and happy first day of NaNoWriMo to those of you who are participating!

I have fond memories of the madness of NaNoWriMo (also known as National Novel Writing Month). I’ve participated many a time, and won a couple of times– one of those times was working on the book that would become my debut novel, Threats of Sky and Sea. Although, in those days, I was still referring to it by its working title, Apparent.

I’ve used the energy of NaNoWriMo in the past as a revision month–what I called NaNoReMo. This year, I’m not participating directly, but I do have some lofty goals.

Namely, this one: I plan to finish this draft of Over Raging Tides (Lady Pirates #1) before Thanksgiving Day in the U.S.

I’m shooting for this draft to be about 50,000 words, so I have approximately 20,000 to go.

Over Raging Tides will be released in March 2018, and as, I’ve booked some promotion and a slot with my editor, I am sticking to these hard and fast deadlines.

To that end, I’m kicking off November 1st with a goal of 3,000 words today. And I thought that I would share some tips I’ve found helpful, as well as wisdom I’ve earned from my time in the NaNoWriMo trenches.

  • One of the most common pieces of NaNoWriMo advices that you’ll see floating around, is also one of the most helpful: “Get the words down. You can fix it later.” Even when it isn’t NaNoWriMo, I find myself repeating these wise words. “Get the words down. You can fix it later.” That, my friends, is what revisions are for. But you can’t edit a blank page.
  • Turn off the internet and eliminate the distraction of social media. I like to use the Freedom app so that I can still google a piece of research, but sometimes shutting off your wifi will work just as well.
  • Write or Die is your best friend. Or, at least, it’s mine. When I’m stuck, there’s nothing like the threat of a screaming baby, screeching violin, or wailing alarm that gets me to put down some words, even if they’re terrible. See also, Written? Kitten! if you prefer positive reinforcement.
  • Similarly, part of the fun of NaNoWriMo is finding the community in it. In years past, I often met my word-count through word sprints that people on Twitter were taking part in. Even if your Twitter follow list isn’t participating in NaNoWriMo, try following @NaNoWordSprints and playing along there.
  • You know that saying, “Comparison is the thief of joy?” I’ve found it to be true. Celebrate your friends’ word counts as you celebrate your own, but don’t worry about how many more or less words they’ve written than you.
  • Take advantage of some of the special offers that NaNoWriMo offers to its participants. I started writing in Scrivener during the free trial offered to NaNo-ers (or Wrimos, if you prefer) and liked it so much that I used the coupon code I was offered when NaNoWriMo was over to buy the full version. I rarely draft in anything else now. In my opinion, its planning features and functionality for writers are unmatched, but if you’re interested in trying out other software, there are other offers available.
  • Finally…

It is OKAY if you don’t “win” NaNoWriMo. Any words you get down this month are words that you didn’t have before. You made progress! And that should be celebrated. No matter what.

Are you participating in NaNoWriMo, or do you have other goals this month? What advice do you find helpful in meeting those goals?

nanowrimo-2016

Hey, friends!

Here’s a very quick post to let you know that I’m going to be participating in NaNoWriMo 2016– also known as National Novel Writing Month again! I’m planning to write a total of the usual 50,000 words, but I plan to do that between drafting two short stories and starting the first draft of my next novel.

You can follow along with me by being my NaNoWriMo 2016 buddy! My profile is here.

Good luck, fellow Wrimos! I’ll see you on the other side~

I didn’t win Camp NaNoWriMo… Or did I?

failing nanowrimo

I love the mindset of NaNoWriMo and its younger sibling, Camp NaNoWriMo. Its focus on clear goals–whether those goals are writing 50,000 words or a revision of 30,000 words– is so good for me.

Focus on those goals. Forget the rest.

I’ve signed up for NaNoWriMo several times and “won” twice. Now and Again was my first NaNoWriMo. And when I truly started buckling down and writing Threats of Sky and Sea, it began its life as a NaNoWriMo project (with the title Apparent… let’s not talk about that).

So, as I’m working on my edits for Fall of Thrones and Thorns, and some friends wanted to put together a “cabin” for Camp NaNoWriMo, it was kind of a no-brainer for me to join in. Camp NaNo is NaNoWriMo’s slightly more sane sister (or insane, depending on your preference). I didn’t have to do 50,000 words. I could make a goal that was reasonable for me, knowing my habits and commitments.

I created that goal.

I didn’t meet it.

If I tried to validate that word count, the Camp NaNo processors would make the equivalent of slashface emojis. I fell short.

So why do I still feel like I won?

The answer’s simple: I did.

No, I didn’t write 30,000 words like I planned. But I wrote 10,000! I figured out my ending! I solved the mystery of why some scenes bothered me and I smoothed out transitions that sorely need it.

Those are small, but important things for a book.

Listen, we all have to acknowledge our wins. Accomplishing goals is great! But so is making progress. Maybe your goal for a day of writing is 1,000 words and you write 300.

Instead of beating yourself up for falling short, celebrate those 300 words! They’re 300 more than you had yesterday!

Instead of feeling like you “lost” NaNoWriMo, think differently. Because I think, if you really think about it, that you probably won.

I’m signing up for Camp NaNoWriMo again in July, and you know what?

I think I’ll win that round, too.

Friday Five #3

Friday Five #3

Oops! Had a bit of a fail on my part and missed last week’s Friday Five. But I’m back with this week’s! 1) I’m rocking these pants today. They have a sort of leather look, but really, they’re just a coated black denim. You guys have no idea how bad-ass I feel. Also, the low is in the fifties tonight, so I’m hoping that that coating means they’re a little warmer than your average jean!     2) NaNoReMo is… well, it’s… going. I’ve been recording myself speaking about my progress every day and intend to splice it up into weekly videos, but here’s what those videos will tell you: Thus far, I’ve added about 3,000 words and revised 1 chapter. Sounds small, but around a really busy week, it’s pretty exciting progress to me! I really think I can make my goal of […]

NaNoReMo– NOT NaNoWriMo

NaNoReMo– NOT NaNoWriMo

Yes, you read that right. No, I didn’t mean NaNoWriMo. Well, maybe I did. Kinda. Sorta. You see, I LOVE NaNoWriMo. But this year, it’s just not in the cards for me. Why? Honestly, while chances are slim that I can do it, I’d like to get Riot of Storm and Smoke (Book 2 in the Threats of Sky and Sea series) out to you guys in December. January at the latest. But I’m still revising in order to make it the best book possible, and since I don’t know for sure when I’ll be able to release it, I haven’t scheduled a cover reveal (this cover though… *squeals*), a blog tour, or really… ANYTHING. Because it’s not done enough. It’s not… fully cooked, y’know? It’d be like if I gave you a burger that was cooked rare when you asked for it well-done. THAT […]

November, November.

November, November.

How is it possible that we’re in November already? It seems like New Year’s was last month; like BEA was last week; like my trip to Virginia and D.C. to see the BFF was yesterday. And even that was already two months ago. October was a pretty calm month. I elected not to do much in the way of Halloween– I didn’t relish the idea of going out on a Thursday when I still needed to be at the office by 9 A.M. No costumes this year! My one concession to the Halloween season (besides the candy. So. Much. Candy.) was an afternoon spent carving pumpkins with my friends. Alas, art is not my calling. My pumpkin was supposed to be a graveyard scene. But my pumpkin wound up with a very odd sort of… face instead. My adventures in […]

Camp NaNoWriMo

Camp NaNoWriMo

Oh jeez… Here we go… Camp NaNoWriMo is UPON US! Unlike NaNoWriMo, you get to set your own word count– but I’m tentatively sticking with the tried and true 50K. Because it would be nice to be legitimately working on another story while I try not to think about Apparent’s future. So in the coming month, expect many writing vents and epiphanies and write-a-thons and SPRINTS on this blog! NaNoWriMo is always crazy and I’m sure that Camp won’t be any different.

NaNoWriMo Write-a-thon Take 2

NaNoWriMo Write-a-thon Take 2

HALLO THERE, FRIENDS. Guess what we’re doing again today? No, I’m not going to just tell you. Guess. All right, fine. It’s another write-a-thon! But this time it’s the last write-a-thon of NaNoWriMo! I am slightly behind where I am supposed to be… today’s NaNo-generated target word  count is 40,000 and I’m at 36,472 after a mad dash of writing to catch up yesterday. So, I’m shooting for the standard write-a-thon 5K so that I’ll be slightly ahead of said 40,000 words. And of course, live-blogging it all. 10 AM: The start time that I chose. I snooze. Because sleep and I are best buds. 10:26 AM: I pull myself over to the computer to find that Lindsey and Christa are ready to go. Aaaaaaand here we gooooo. 36,472. 0 words today. 11:10 AM: I am building up to/avoiding writing this really BIG scene because I’m […]

NaNoWriMo Check In!

NaNoWriMo Check In!

There are 8 days left in November and hence, 8 days left of NaNoWriMo. I have been alternately super-productive and the antithesis of productivity, but after doing a bunch of “sprints” with @NaNoWordSprints, I’ve managed to almost catch up to where I’m supposed to be, and should be fully caught up with the planned Write-a-thon tomorrow. And I’m also really excited for that finish line that’s coming up soon. Because honestly, this draft is so much more workable than my last one. I’m excited to incorporate transitions, major and minor details, and feedback from my CPs. I’m excited to delete the extraneous and fine-tune my strong metaphors. I’m excited to print out my current draft and take my pink pen to it with abandon. Because even though it may take another couple of drafts while I tweak it, I’m so close to what I want my book […]
