January review: Truthwitch by Susan Dennard

Posted January 5, 2016 by Jennifer Ellision in blog, Books / 0 Comments

This month’s review of Truthwitch by Susan Dennard was selected by

my Patreon patrons!

truthwitchSo, first of all, I MUST THANK my patrons for selecting this as my first read of 2016 because wow, Wow, WOW. Truthwitch by Susan Dennard is a truly stunning example of fantasy and I am so very glad that it was my first read this year.

I’m always a bit nervous to read books that share a common ~element with my stories. In this case, that element is… elements. And people’s abilities to control them. But a friend who had read Truthwitch assured me that it was very different from my Threats series, so I (eagerly) opened the book.

And was so busy reading Truthwitch in one sitting that I was nearly late for a wedding that I was attending that night.

The beautiful thing about this review is that I don’t have any criticism. I can simply sing Truthwitch and Susan Dennard’s praises. Let’s go down the list of all that I loved about this book.

Awesome ladies being awesome

Iseult and Safi have such different personalities and they compliment each other perfectly. There are also some really cool ladies in the supporting cast… like Empress Vaness for instance. I found her particularly fascinating, but I also enjoyed the other women, as well– be they cinnamon rolls, wise and kick-ass, or lying, power-hungry what-have-yous.

Womance (or WoTP, if you prefer)

The relationship at the very heart of Truthwitch is the amazing and steadfast friendship between Safi and Iseult. They put each other’s safety above all else and it’s incredible. I love that they’re considered Threadsisters. That Dennard acknowledges the importance of friends turned family without the ties of blood really resounded with me.

A complex, intricate world and politics

The world-building in Dennard’s Truthwitch is A+++++. From the past war to the religious orders and sovereign nations to the world’s mythology and magic, you really get a sense of how things work and it all builds up to transport a reader to an incredible world.

In short, Truthwitch was stunning and I join the hordes of folks waiting to get their hands on the next book, Windwitch.

But lucky for us all, Truthwitch is out in the world now.

Breathe In release day

Untitled design (6)Hello all!

A blog! Two days in a row! This must be some sort of record for me.

This one will be brief. I’m thrilled to welcome Breathe In to the ranks of published Threats shorts.

Breathe In centers around Lady Corrine, a character you may not remember very much about, to be quite honest. She’s never appeared on page before and has been mentioned only briefly.

She was Bree’s Da’s–Duke Ardin’s– wife.

Breathe In is the closest to a love story that anything I’ve written in the Threats-verse has come and I just love Lady Corrine so much that I can’t believe I only “met” her a few months ago. She’s the sweetest character that I’ve written in ages and I am so glad that I was privileged enough to find her story, even if it hurt me (and my critique partners) to write it.

Breathe In is available for Kindle now.

Breathe

About Breathe In:

Every winter, the snow glitters like a pretty lie. The winter palace swarms with visiting nobles. And Lady Corrine fights not to lose her breath.

Because whether he means to or not, Duke Ardin steals it away.

Ear Candy – Booktrack and audio shorts

Hey guys! I am so, so, SOOO excited to let you guys know about a really cool development with Threats of Sky and Sea today. A few months ago, the folks over at Booktrack reached out to work with me and create a Booktrack for Threats. I looked into Booktrack and was really WOW-ed by what I learned. A Booktrack is a movie-style soundtrack to coincide with text, complete with ambient sounds and dramatic scoring. It’s a super immersive reading experience that puts a reader more fully into the text by utilizing another sense for the experience. I’ve been lucky enough to preview what they’ve put together for Threats of Sky and Sea and it’s incredible. For a limited time, you can get the Threats of Sky and Sea Booktrack for just $1.99. For anyone worried– that includes both the Threats text and the accompanying Booktrack. Hurry, because while […]

A letter to Riot of Storm and Smoke on release day

A letter to Riot of Storm and Smoke on release day

Happy book birthday, Riot of Storm and Smoke!  Like your older sibling, Threats of Sky and Sea, I want to write you a letter on this, your release day. Like Threats, there were times I doubted we’d be able to get to this point. In writing you, there were often multiple steps back for every step forward. But unlike with Threats, I always knew where you, Riot, would start and end. It was just all of the stuff in the middle that took me a while to figure out. You were different and, like so many younger siblings, you struggled to define yourself. To stand apart from Threats of Sky and Sea. And boy, did you manage. To illustrate that point, I’ve pulled together a couple of small graphs for a few of these differences:   Love you, Riot. Mean it. Your author, Jennifer Ellision Readers, you can now find Riot of […]

Less than a month until RIOT OF STORM AND SMOKE

Hello, my friends! Oh my gosh, Riot of Storm and Smoke comes out so, so, SO soon. Less than a month until August 18! Here’s what’s happened lately: I made these promises: RIOT has 6 pre-orders rn on kindle… if it gets to 15, I’ll record myself singing a fav song from my RIOT playlist http://t.co/RoLNc5uXED — Jen Ellision is a USA Today Bestselling Author! (@JenEllision) July 24, 2015 But if it gets to 25 pre-release, I’ll embarrass myself and attempt Rachel Platten’s Fight Song. — Jen Ellision is a USA Today Bestselling Author! (@JenEllision) July 24, 2015 It’s at 13 pre-orders right now, so I’m… actually kind of nervous that these are things I will have to do, but I AM A WOMAN OF MY WORD. (I’m slightly less nervous about the first one, but Fight Song is hard, […]
