My Writing Process “blog tour”

What am I working on?

Well, I’ve just wrapped up a short story that accompanies Threats of Sky and Sea and will be in the upcoming issue of Inaccurate Realities (Issue #3: Magic). Shout-out to this YA speculative fiction literary magazine real quick because it’s fantastic.

I’m also tinkering with edits on another ToSaS short story for release in September, titled Sisters of Wind and Flame. But, mostly, I’m working on book #2 of the Threats of Sky and Sea series– still currently untitled, but which will hopefully be released in December!

How does my work differ from others of its genre?

Hmmm, well to be honest, while THREATS OF SKY AND SEA definitely has unique things about it, I feel like it would do a lot of the fantasy genre a discredit to claim that they’re not themes that you can find in some of them as well. My main character Bree has to deal with defining herself outside of her family, which I think is a strong theme of YA fiction in general. I wanted prose and quippy snark to coexist and I made an effort to incorporate strong female characters and friendships, and to refrain from some of my own literary pet peeves as well.

I hope that I’ve managed to insert enough of the staples of what I love about the genre, as well as the plot that is exclusive to Threats of Sky and Sea.

Why do I write what I do?

I have always been a HUGE, huge fan of fantasy books, from way back when I was reading Tamora Pierce as an adolescent. Added to that is the fact that I’ve always been very inspired by (magical) female friendships/bonds from series like Sailor Moon. It was really important to me to contribute more strong female characters to the books out there.

And, I mean, adding in a dash of righted wrongs, triumphs over evil, and hot princes doesn’t hurt either.

How does my writing process work?

My writing process is… well it’s hard to pin down.

I have lots of spurts where the words flow without stopping. I have some days where it’s like pulling teeth. Sometimes I write in order. Sometimes I write out of order. One thing that I can say for certain is that I’m a pantser, which usually means I write a discovery draft and then revise, revise, revise, revise, x 10. It takes a lot of work to get my drafts to one where the plot makes sense.

Molli Moran is a Southern writer who doesn’t consider her day complete if she hasn’t written. She loves coffee and talking fast, things she attributes to being raised by Gilmore Girls. She’s a romantic at heart, and brings that to her books. When not reading or blogging, she can be found obsessing over Doctor Who, cuddling her various pets, or spending time with friends, family, or her girlfriend.
