Positive reinforcement FTW

So, Apparent is not done. But that is next on my list today. 3 scenes left… I think that’s the count anyway. This past weekend, I reunited with a few friends in Orlando for some fun, but laid-back times. On Friday, a bunch of them stayed at my family’s timeshare with me and we played games, reminisced and chatted. These days, most people that I talk to (albeit online) are niched firmly in the same world I am. Our days revolve around books, writing, and blogging. But my “real life” friends have interests that vary far and wide from those topics. Nevertheless, they’re always so encouraging. They ask me about my Work in Progress, how the process works after I finish a draft. They tell me that despite not being at all involved in the book world, they love to see me […]

GOOOOOOOOOOOOL! (s)

GOOOOOOOOOOOOL! (s)

Yes, I was trying to reference soccer with the blog post title. Did that come through? Because I’m such a huge sports fan as I huddle in my writing and reading cave, OBVIOUSLY. So, I went to New York… and then I came back home to sunny South Florida. Also known as BLISTERINGLY HOT South Florida. Summer is truly upon us, but Dorothy had it right, there is really no place like home. Something about seeing the book world come together for Book Expo America was amazingly inspiring. And coming home to my wonderful, but a bit hum-drum life was sad. But the conference really lit a fire under my butt. I want to start living my dream. To that end… some GOALS: -I’m going to finish the first draft of my Work in Progress (tentatively titled Apparent) this week. I […]

Remember that time I was supposed to get to NY at 2:30?

Remember that time I was supposed to get to NY at 2:30?

Day 1: Sunday: Lalala, bored in the airport so I’m blogging/live-blogging my hassles at the airport. Will recap this in a much more pleasant and shorter form on Almost Grown-up at a later date. 8:25 AM: Wake up. ZOMGGGGG I’M GOING TO NEW YORK TODAYYYYY 9:30 AM: Chug water on way to the airport as I brag to my parents about how HYDRATED I’m going to be on my flight 10:30 AM: Through security! What a speedy process this is looking to be. I feel so much better about flying with Spirit Airlines. Let me just grab one of the few available gate seats left and settle in with my Kindle before I board… 10:45 AM: Flight gets delayed 2 1/2 hours. They can’t get me on a different one. Regretting earlier optimism regarding Spirit. Text/e-mail roommates. Apprise Twitter of […]

Season finales

Season finales

SO. Tis the season… of season finales. AKA those shows that tend to twist me up into little balls of feelings so intense that it is all that I can do not to rock myself back and forth. I love a good story, obviously, and along with books, this means I am completely addicted to television, so I watch A LOT OF SHOWS. And here is my reaction to a few season/series finales… so far. In other words…

Un Plan de Vuelo*

Un Plan de Vuelo*

Okay friends, here is a confession of one of my many, many quirks: I like to plan. NAY, I LOVE to plan. So therefore, for the upcoming trip that I mentioned in my last post, I am trying to plot a schedule/budget. I have been on Google Maps Street View all day exploring the streets near the apartment that I’m staying in, as well fiddling (for the umpteenth time) with my budget for the trip. I now know such useful information as the location of Shake Shack, that there is a pizza place around the corner, and that Five Napkin Burger (SOUNDS HEALTHY, RIGHT?!) is just up the street. I’ve figure out that directions to get to the convention center and Central Park are both very nice and easy. Joyously easy to walk. I have discovered that online Subway maps […]

New York, New York!

New York, New York!

Once upon a time I went to New York. This was in high school, and I went with two of my best friends and our yearbook adviser for the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. In between the conference, we were very TOURISTY. We went to Battery Park and Central Park, toured Rockefeller Center and NBC (I would totally do the entire thing again), stayed in Time Square, travelled by subway, bought handbags on canal street, ate at Katz’s Deli (where one of my FAVORITE scenes from When Harry Met Sally took place) ate at Tavern on the Green, and… yeah. TOURIST. And in less than a month (ahhhh, is that real life?!) I’m going back for Book Expo America. And per Lindsey’s suggestion, I am making a list of things that I want to do. Some of them are repeats of […]

I put the pro in procrastinate

I’m using this post to stall for time. Which is to say that I’m delaying the things that I know I should be doing instead. Thing #1- Going to the gym to work on week 3 of Couch to 5K.  Which feels just short of impossible… but yeah. I’m going. I swear. As soon as my phone has enough of a charge to last for 30 minutes of music because doing that without it also feels just short of impossible Thing #2- Writing. Because I’ve been blocked on my work in progress for probably around a month and I’m just trying to squeeze the words out right now. I was going with the NaNoWriMo method of 1,667 words a day, but have been less than successful. Also I’m writing a fantasy novel and I just finished reading BITTERBLUE which was awesome […]

Jen on Jen action… by which I mean I talk about myself.

Jen on Jen action… by which I mean I talk about myself.

So. Some things about me/this space/why it’s here. 1) I already have a blog, but starting one that isn’t almost entirely devoted to Young Adult book reviews like Almost Grown-up is seemed like a fun idea. I’m following the example of fellow writer/book blogger Lindsey of Lindsey with an E and Storm of Words. 2) I have no idea how often I’m going to post on here or what I’m going to post about, really. 3) My life is consumed by books. In EVERY form. I’m working on my own novel now, having written two terrible ones before for NaNoWriMo. I’m part of a book club. I mentioned the book blog thing already… And I’m also an intern with a literary development company and an intern for a literary agent. 4) …But I’m basically unemployed right now. 5) I’m hoping […]
