“I’ve only just remembered that I asked you and Sam to survey the cargo and supplies. What did you find?”

He blanches. “THAT’S what you were thinking about when I was kissing you?”

“Why? What were you thinking about?” The question slips free in a desperate bid for control over the situation. But I embolden him.

He steps closer, looking as though he means to kiss me again and remind me what I should be thinking of. But when he leans down, it’s not to my lips… but my ear. The Allarian nobleman’s voice is a velvety purr as his breath mists over my lobe.

“I was thinking of mouths,” he says innocently. “Hot and wet.”

My own mouth goes dry.

“Skin,” Leo continues, drawing the back of his hand down my cheek. “Taut and tight.”

I shiver in delicious anticipation, unable to help it as I lean into his touch.

“Your voice,” he says.

“Leo, I–“

“Yes, just like that,” he says, pulling back slightly to look down at me with a smirk. “Your voice saying my name. However did you guess?”

All right, enough is enough. I step back and frown. “Your report of the cargo, Mr. Wesson?” I ask pointedly.

It doesn’t break the delight dancing in his eyes. Where had my flustered nobleman gone? I wonder with dismay. But I’d forgotten that Leo was the same cocksure boy who had swept his way into Captain Ilene’s cabin on the Luck and never broke a sweat.

“Ah, that’s right,” he says with the same low pitch to his voice. “You wanted to know what we found down below.” His lips quirk. “Coincidentally, that was something I was thinking of during our kiss as well.”

My brow furrows.

“We found sheets, you see, Grace,” he says smoothly. “Miles and miles of tangled sheets.”

What happens when a monster girl falls for a princess? The Little Monster release

The Little Monster release

The Little Monster: an LGBT retelling of The Little Mermaid and a prequel to the Lady Pirates series is available now!

The little monster met the little human. And that was the beginning and end of the world as they knew it.

MARA is a monster. One of the feared Mordgris, mermaid-like sea monsters of the deep who steal faces and souls. They trail pirate, naval, and merchant ships alike in the hopes of finding their next meal.

AMISTA’s father just fell overboard for the Mordgris to feast upon. Good riddance, she thinks. He was a shoddy example of a father and not a much better king. And she’s tired of being a proper princess and pretending otherwise for polite society.

When the two meet, Mara knows she should make a meal of the little human. But how can she resist discovering more about the one who behaves so differently from the rest of her kind?

And to Amista, Mara may not be so monstrous after all…

In this imaginative new spin on the classic tale of The Little Mermaid and prequel to the Lady Pirates series, Mara and Amista will battle decades-long fear and loathing between their kinds.

And not everyone will get to keep their soul.

5 Favorite YA Fantasy Maps

Posted February 18, 2019 by Jennifer Ellision in blog, Lady Pirates / 0 Comments

As an avid reader of YA Fantasy, I’ve always had a bit of a thing for beautiful fantasy maps. I’d flip from the middle of books to fantasy maps at the front of books, or I’d look up fantasy maps on an author’s website.

So today, I want to talk about some of those favorite YA fantasy maps and what I love about them.

Here, we have the first of my favorite fantasy maps: a map of Tortall, a world created by Tamora Pierce, who was an influential writer for me growing up. There’s some nostalgia factored in making this my first fantasy map choice: it’s the first one that I can remember.

Alanna: The First Adventure by Tamora Pierce

I clearly remember being awed when I saw the map for Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse. The artist gave it such amazing depth and the gash in Ravka that is the Unsea is such a great depiction!

Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

I loved all of the illustrations through Sightwitch by Susan Dennard, but I especially love this map! I really enjoy how it isn’t flat like most fantasy maps I’m used to seeing.

Sightwitch by Susan Dennard

The sprawling world Sarah J. Maas created in her Throne of Glass series lends itself to an epic map like this one! It really helps to get a grip on the world since her characters travel so far and wide.

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

And the last of the fantasy maps on this list is particularly special to me…

The Map of Omna. The world of the Lady Pirates series. Yes, this is a map of one of my own worlds, so it’s particularly special to me. And OF COURSE, it’s one of my favorite fantasy maps!

The Map of Omna is a magical map that is particularly important to the plot of the Lady Pirates seres and I had a blast working with my designer to develop this interpretation of the world.

There’s so much I love about it from the pirate-y symbols, to the sea creatures to the fact that ONE OF MY BOOKS HAS A MAP, Y’ALL.

I hope you readers love it as much as I do.

The Little Mermaid Retelling Collection: Cover Reveal for Kingdom of Salt & Sirens

Hello, my loves! I had a blast closing out 2018 by participating in my first box set, Kingdom of Glass & Ashes: A Limited Edition Collection of Cinderella Retellings. (Which, psssst, is now in KU, if you haven’t heard!) Overall, the set was a resounding success, soaring to #1 New Release and #1 Bestseller status in its categories within the first week! Also, it’s got awesome reviews so far. So, when the creators of that set offered up another opportunity for a fairytale boxset that fit a Lady Pirates prequel novella, I just couldn’t say no. After the Glass & Ashes experience, I’m pleased to announce THE LITTLE MONSTER will release in KINGDOM OF SALT & SIRENS: A Limited Edition Collection of Little Mermaid Retellings on March 5, 2019! Like Glass & Ashes, Salt & Sirens is a YA collection […]

Time for a letter to my newest book that’s out in the world. Dear Fathoms, I think you’re the fastest I’ve ever written a book. Not just drafted, but drafted, drafted again, and revised it. Fathoms, you focused on a different aspect of the story of the Lady Pirates series and I think you helped Grace grow majorly as a character. I also want to thank you for coming through so clearly for the readers, who have been eager for their next installment. I didn’t want […]

Now Available: The Over Raging Tides Audiobook

Ahoy there, lovely readers! Exciting news! The Over Raging Tides audiobook is out now! The Over Raging Tides audiobook was produced by Victoria Boulton, who brought not only a stellar reading, but also her lovely British accent to the narration. Victoria created an immersive listening experience that wowed me– and I knew it would the second that I listened to her audition for the book. Many of the narrators who auditioned for the Over Raging Tides audiobook were undoubtably talented, but not the perfect fit for the story, like Victoria was. What’s more, Victoria went the extra step of messaging me before she recorded the audition to see whether I would prefer she read it in an English or American accents. Talented as she is, she’s capable of both! Once I heard her audition and confirmed she’d be available to record the rest of the […]

A Letter to Over Raging Tides on its Release Day

A Letter to Over Raging Tides on its Release Day

It’s the release day of Over Raging Tides, book 1 in the Lady Pirates series! I have a bit of a tradition on this blog wherein I write a letter to my new book and characters on the day of a book release. I’m pretty fond of it at this point. I spend so long trying to get IN their heads, it’s not often that I get to talk TO them. So. Dear Grace– and Over Raging Tides, You guys and Over Raging Tides have lived quietly in the back of my mind for a while now. While the first scene of Over Raging Tides that I wrote burst into my mind with a bang, you were pretty content to wait your turn while I finished Elementals: The Threats of Sky and Sea series. That’s incredible to me in some […]
