I didn’t win Camp NaNoWriMo… Or did I?

failing nanowrimo

I love the mindset of NaNoWriMo and its younger sibling, Camp NaNoWriMo. Its focus on clear goals–whether those goals are writing 50,000 words or a revision of 30,000 words– is so good for me.

Focus on those goals. Forget the rest.

I’ve signed up for NaNoWriMo several times and “won” twice. Now and Again was my first NaNoWriMo. And when I truly started buckling down and writing Threats of Sky and Sea, it began its life as a NaNoWriMo project (with the title Apparent… let’s not talk about that).

So, as I’m working on my edits for Fall of Thrones and Thorns, and some friends wanted to put together a “cabin” for Camp NaNoWriMo, it was kind of a no-brainer for me to join in. Camp NaNo is NaNoWriMo’s slightly more sane sister (or insane, depending on your preference). I didn’t have to do 50,000 words. I could make a goal that was reasonable for me, knowing my habits and commitments.

I created that goal.

I didn’t meet it.

If I tried to validate that word count, the Camp NaNo processors would make the equivalent of slashface emojis. I fell short.

So why do I still feel like I won?

The answer’s simple: I did.

No, I didn’t write 30,000 words like I planned. But I wrote 10,000! I figured out my ending! I solved the mystery of why some scenes bothered me and I smoothed out transitions that sorely need it.

Those are small, but important things for a book.

Listen, we all have to acknowledge our wins. Accomplishing goals is great! But so is making progress. Maybe your goal for a day of writing is 1,000 words and you write 300.

Instead of beating yourself up for falling short, celebrate those 300 words! They’re 300 more than you had yesterday!

Instead of feeling like you “lost” NaNoWriMo, think differently. Because I think, if you really think about it, that you probably won.

I’m signing up for Camp NaNoWriMo again in July, and you know what?

I think I’ll win that round, too.

NaNoReMo– NOT NaNoWriMo

nanoremoYes, you read that right.

No, I didn’t mean NaNoWriMo. Well, maybe I did. Kinda. Sorta.

You see, I LOVE NaNoWriMo. But this year, it’s just not in the cards for me.

Why?

Honestly, while chances are slim that I can do it, I’d like to get Riot of Storm and Smoke (Book 2 in the Threats of Sky and Sea series) out to you guys in December. January at the latest. But I’m still revising in order to make it the best book possible, and since I don’t know for sure when I’ll be able to release it, I haven’t scheduled a cover reveal (this cover though… *squeals*), a blog tour, or really… ANYTHING. Because it’s not done enough. It’s not… fully cooked, y’know? It’d be like if I gave you a burger that was cooked rare when you asked for it well-done.

THAT is where NaNoReMo* comes in.**

NATIONAL

NOVEL

REVISION

MONTH

Because, see, I love the community and energy that comes with NaNoWriMo and I’d like to take advantage of that and participate SOMEHOW. I won’t be posting on the NaNo site– because I’m not sure how I’d update really, but I will be updating this blog!

Goals:

1) Rewrite Act 3 (roughly 20,000 words– this is job 1, which I WILL be doing on November 1st, when everyone has that mad writing energy)

2) Expand on scenes in Acts 1 & 2.

3) Fine-tune entire draft, shading in plot points added since finishing Draft 1, fixing clunky language, etc., etc.

4) Document progress in weekly videos, covering each day of the past week.

*I highly doubt I’m the first one to come up with this and I make no claims on the name.

**Also, I’m already revising and don’t intend to wait until November 1st to keep going ^_~

Revision log

So, here is a plan:

I’m going to update this post with revision progress day by day until I’m querying. WHICH means the last update to it will read:

“MM/DD/13: Sent out first batch of queries. BRB vomiting.”

And that will probably be the only thing I say re: querying on this blog because it’s seems kinda jinx-y to put that out there for the public.

ANYway. I shall start with today’s progress:

5/2/13 2:30 PM: Completed Alex‘s revisions up to the end of Act 2. Began making a list of crutch phrases. Created a Wordle to help me figure out the really BIG crutch words.

5/2/13 10:47 PM: Finished Alex’s revisions. (!!!) Also I had a minor stroke-type episode where I decided I was going to rewrite the whole book in 1st person present tense… it’s currently 3rd past. I think I’ve decided most of it works as is, but the problems where I’m having trouble getting CLOSE/in Bree’s head, I might do it as an exercise. WOOO.

5/3/13 9:46 PM: Nope, okay, I’m switching it to first present… And all of today was consumed with doing that with one chapter. But I think that one chapter is actually much stronger now so WOOO. Butttt this will probably delay my querying.

5/6/13 10:03 AM: I had a friend visiting me over the weekend, so though I had a GREAT weekend, I got very little work done– just two pages when I woke up before my guest– but as of about 20 minutes ago, another chapter is complete and hopefully one or two more today!

5/7/13 10:06 PM: Made the POV/tense/other changes through Act 1! 2 acts left and 70% left to goooo. I have high hopes that this round of revisions will be complete this week!

5/8/13 1:40 PM: Was hoping to finish a chapter, but a possibly rabid raccoon scared me away from the picnic tables behind my office building during my lunch break. Sadness.

5/18/13: Whoops, I’ve been lax about updating this, so here’s the breakdown. I officially passed 80K, was interrupted by the raccoon another day, heard back from CP Lindsey, and have 6 1/2 chapters left of Act 3 before this pass is done. If all goes well, there will be another entry from me today declaring that this pass-through is COMPLETE.

5/22/13: Again, have been TOTALLY lax about updating this, but sent out my first batch of queries today. Apparent is roughly 81K and the urge to vomit comes and goes.

Post-draft-finishing feelings

Post-draft-finishing feelings

Last night at approximately 11:33 PM, I finished the third second? fourth? to be honest, I don’t even know anymore. My drafts were a pretty messy affair draft of Apparent with exactly 75,100 words. And I cried. There were many reasons for this. One was that I was flipping tired. I get grouchy when I’m not snuggled under my covers by an hour that my sleeping schedule deems satisfactory. The second reason was something I shall never reveal because I have to keep a certain air of “writerly mystery.” …I mean, I guess that’s is how this is supposed to go anyway. But thirdly and finally, I cried because I finally felt close like I’d gotten close to what I want the book to be. Both of my other drafts were… how do I put this delicately? They were a mess. I […]

PARTAY TIME- Or: Revise-a-thon round 2

PARTAY TIME- Or: Revise-a-thon round 2

Good morning! So Lindsey and I are BACK to give our darling manuscripts a little TLC. The last time that we did this, I was trying to finish up Act 2 of this draft (draft 3). This time around, I’m finishing up Act 3. I hope. So, what does this translate to? Well, I know I’m making some big cuts to a scene that currently goes on WAY too long and is MOSTLY unnecessary, so I’ll need to tweak it to where I talk about what MATTERS and edit it to make it ~flow. I’ll be killing lots of darlings and cutting other scenes that no longer work with the ending that needs to happen. And now that I’m really LOOKING/thinking about what is left to REWRITE in this draft, I don’t think it’s 3 chapters like I’m been saying. […]

The past three months wrapped up in a tidy post.

The past three months wrapped up in a tidy post.

Because I post so sporadically, I rarely update you all on my life. And it usually seems to be in bullets when I do. Maybe that will change and maybe it won’t. But for now, updating this blog at all seems better than the alternative. So, let’s talk about my last few months, mmmk? In February, I went to DISNEY to celebrate my friend Kelsey’s birthday! Kelsey used to intern at the parks and remained friends with people who worked there who agreed to use their employee passes to get us in fo free. I’m a pretty big Disney nerd and I had a great time. We went to Hollywood Studios, Epcot, and Magic Kingdom in one day and then returned again the next day solely for Magic Kingdom. It was unseasonably cold for Florida (in the forties and fifties, […]

The new “a-thon:” Of a revising nature

The new “a-thon:” Of a revising nature

I have had my 2nd draft “done” since November. Except not. Because it is RIFE with plot holes, placeholder names, weird sentences and scenes without the tension the should have. I won’t think about Act 3 too much right now, because it is missing scenes more than the desert misses the rain. …see what I mean about those weird 1st draft sentences? But Act 2– THAT is in my power to fix. So Lindsey and I are revise-a-thonning today. My goal: fix revising Act 2. Which might be a little crazy because it means trying to work my way through 40 more pages (I’ve already done 20), and ADDING things. Hopefully the insanity is warranted. Also, if you want to join in (with revision OR just writing), let us know and tweet us! Me on Twitter | Lindsey on Twitter […]

GOOOOOOOOOOOOL! (s)

GOOOOOOOOOOOOL! (s)

Yes, I was trying to reference soccer with the blog post title. Did that come through? Because I’m such a huge sports fan as I huddle in my writing and reading cave, OBVIOUSLY. So, I went to New York… and then I came back home to sunny South Florida. Also known as BLISTERINGLY HOT South Florida. Summer is truly upon us, but Dorothy had it right, there is really no place like home. Something about seeing the book world come together for Book Expo America was amazingly inspiring. And coming home to my wonderful, but a bit hum-drum life was sad. But the conference really lit a fire under my butt. I want to start living my dream. To that end… some GOALS: -I’m going to finish the first draft of my Work in Progress (tentatively titled Apparent) this week. I […]
