My first school visit

My first school visit

Last week, I had the pleasure of attending a high school book club, where the club read Threats of Sky and Sea this month. Equal parts nervous and elated, I left Day Job early and pulled up to a place that I don’t think I’ve been to since 2006– when I graduated from there. This was my first school visit and I tried to disregard the surrealism of the situation– along with the urge to cry out that “I DON’T EVEN GO HERE.” Not someone who is innately comfortable with attention, I was pretty dang nervous, but the informal setting quickly helped me relax. I’d estimate that about 20 students attended. We pulled together chairs in a loose circle around a table, and let the questions fly.   The school visit was off, and moving fast. A lot of questions that […]

Defining Justice prequel short: announcement and cover reveal

Defining Justice prequel short: announcement and cover reveal

Heyyyy youuuu guyssss! You may remember that my Prince Caden short story, Defining Justice, was published about a year ago in Inaccurate Realities Issue #3: Magic. I’m so pleased to have been included in such a wonderful collection (seriously, the other stories are A+. I definitely recommend checking it out). But I’m equally pleased to announce that Defining Justice will soon be available on its own! With the story expanded slightly, Defining Justice will be coming to you in e-book form on May 4, 2015, and you can find the short blurb right here! One of Prince Caden’s earliest explanations of justice came from his father. But with an Earth Elemental’s life on the line, Caden learns to define it for himself. You can add Defining Justice on Goodreads here. And… check out the cover below! This cover is special to me […]

Alternate Titles Game

Alternate Titles Game

Hello, hello, my friends! First, a quick reminder that the giveaway for an Audible copy of Threats of Sky and Sea ends soon! Second, I’m here to play the alternate titles game today! Basically, this is a game in which I scroll through my manuscript eight times, stop randomly and choose a line from where I’ve stopped to be an “alternate title.” I played with both Threats of Sky and Sea, which is obviously complete, and Riot of Storm and Smoke, which is obviously not and while some were ridiculous, a couple actually had potential! I know what to do if I’m ever stuck for a title on future projects ^_~ Threats of Sky and Sea My Heart is Dancing a Jig Whispers of Lies How They Found Me Better Alive Than Dead Vain About His Fingernails Shift the Kindling […]

Announcing the Threats of Sky and Sea audiobook!

Announcing the Threats of Sky and Sea audiobook!

Okay, first, the bad news: I am entirely unsure when Riot of Storm and Smoke will be available. In retrospect, I should have anticipated it would be longer than my target date of December.  Threats of Sky and Sea took me a good year and a half-two years to write, revise, and edit. It was foolish to think that I could whittle the time frame down so drastically for Riot of Storm and Smoke, especially as it still needs to go through editing, formatting, etc., etc. But it is coming.  I’ll get you an official date as soon as humanly possible. But let’s get to the good part of this post. Threats of Sky and Sea is coming to a set of earbuds near you! …That is, as February 10, 2015, Threats of Sky and Sea will be an audiobook, narrated by Misty Daugherty! You can […]

Ghosts, flashlights, and book research

Ghosts, flashlights, and book research

Those of you who read last week’s Friday Five know that I went on a ghost tour a couple of week ago in St. Augustine. See, I have a book in really early development stages that will involve a certain amount of ghostitude (no details coming for a while yet, but let’s call it Ghost Book), so I wanted to get an idea of some things involved in dealing with ghosts from someone who makes a living in ghost stories. The only other ghost tour I’ve ever been on was also in St. Augustine– around thirteen years ago when I was thirteen. I remember being more impressed by that one, but in all fairness, that was clearly a theatrical ghost tour. The one I went on earlier this month specifically advertises itself as the best “non-theatrical” ghost tour in St. Augustine. […]

Friday Five #4

Heeeeello and happy Friday! Here’s the five: 1) Two weeks ago was the wedding of a college friend, so that definitely makes the top of the list of happy-making occasions! You could really feel the love in the room. ^_^ I failed to get a picture with the lovely couple at the wedding itself, but below is a photo at the after “party.” Left to right: me, the groom, the bride, BFF, BFF’s fiance. 2) Said wedding meant a slew of other good things, liiiiike reuniting with my BFF! 3) Visiting one of my favorite places in Florida: St. Augustine   4) Taking a ghost tour with EMF detectors (expect a whole blog post on this topic soonish) 5) And getting to dress up. I really, really love getting all dolled up and don’t get to do it too often. My […]

Turning a profit

Turning a profit

I have waited quite a few moons to be able to make this post– but this month has finally done it. Threats of Sky and Sea is finally earning a profit! (All you need for my emotions here are 0:20-026) Wait, what do you mean it’s earning a profit? You’ve sold books before now, right? Yes, thankfully I have! But between cover design, formatting, editing, and publicity, I tossed a good chunk of change into making Threats of Sky and Sea a success… roughly $2,000 worth. Though I released in May, it’s only now that I’m starting to actually profit, meaning I’ve earned back the money that I’ve invested. I expected that, and knew I was in this for the long haul, but man, it feels good to be officially earning from my writing. I’ve always found posts from fellow self-publishers regarding their […]

Friday Five #3

Friday Five #3

Oops! Had a bit of a fail on my part and missed last week’s Friday Five. But I’m back with this week’s! 1) I’m rocking these pants today. They have a sort of leather look, but really, they’re just a coated black denim. You guys have no idea how bad-ass I feel. Also, the low is in the fifties tonight, so I’m hoping that that coating means they’re a little warmer than your average jean!     2) NaNoReMo is… well, it’s… going. I’ve been recording myself speaking about my progress every day and intend to splice it up into weekly videos, but here’s what those videos will tell you: Thus far, I’ve added about 3,000 words and revised 1 chapter. Sounds small, but around a really busy week, it’s pretty exciting progress to me! I really think I can make my goal of […]
