NaNoReMo– NOT NaNoWriMo

NaNoReMo– NOT NaNoWriMo

Yes, you read that right. No, I didn’t mean NaNoWriMo. Well, maybe I did. Kinda. Sorta. You see, I LOVE NaNoWriMo. But this year, it’s just not in the cards for me. Why? Honestly, while chances are slim that I can do it, I’d like to get Riot of Storm and Smoke (Book 2 in the Threats of Sky and Sea series) out to you guys in December. January at the latest. But I’m still revising in order to make it the best book possible, and since I don’t know for sure when I’ll be able to release it, I haven’t scheduled a cover reveal (this cover though… *squeals*), a blog tour, or really… ANYTHING. Because it’s not done enough. It’s not… fully cooked, y’know? It’d be like if I gave you a burger that was cooked rare when you asked for it well-done. THAT […]

Friday Five #2

Friday Five #2

It’s that time of the week again! Here’s another Friday Five. 1. Since my favorite trainer has left my gym, I’ve been hitting the cardio heavily, and making better use of my secondary gym membership at LA Fitness. I’ve never really been a runner, but I’m pretty proud of the progress I’m making. I’m finishing up Week 4 of the Couch to 5K training method, and getting ready to start Week 5 this weekend! It’s not the first time I’ve utilized the Couch to 5K method, but it’s only the second time that I’ve made it this far. I’m doing the Turkey Trot 5K on Thanksgiving this year and my goal is to actually run it this time!   2. I sent the first three chapters of Riot of Storm and Smoke to two of my critique partners yesterday! I was excited, […]

The right to dislike

The right to dislike

This will be a short post. If you keep up with the book blogging world in any way, you’ve likely already seen the insanity that is Kathleen Hale’s terrifying piece for The Guardian in which a book blogger wrote a negative review of Hale’s work and Hale detailed her obsession and her graduation from a badly behaving author to a full-fledged stalker. (If you’ve not read the piece and need to quell your curiosity, I urge you to use this link, which will not give it any more undeserved hits.) The blogger has since quit blogging, which upsets me beyond words. She’s been made to feel unsafe in her own home. This is not something that should ever happen. Ever. And I just want to say here what I said on my Facebook page yesterday: “Major craziness went down in the world […]

Friday Five #1

Friday Five #1

In an effort to keep this blog updated, I’m going to attempt to keep up with a weekly “Friday Five” list! 1. On Monday, I had Canadian Thanksgiving (Yes, I live in this U.S. Yes, it was technically for Columbus Day. No, I don’t think Columbus deserves a holiday.) off of work, so I went to the beach for a couple of hours with friends and my sunburn is only very mild. (I promise I wore sunscreen.) 2. We’re having our second “snap” of cold this season in South Florida right now! I’m pretty excited to be able to wear the boots and sweaters that I’m unable to stop myself from buying and only be SLIGHTLY ridiculous, as opposed to FULLY ridiculous. 3. I discovered this song (“Geronimo” by Sheppard) via a Blogilates Instagram video this week and I have been […]

Complicated thinkings.

Complicated thinkings.

I’m having a lot of them lately. Thoughts about motivation and perseverance. About time. And energy. About the things I love to do that engage my mind, about the social things I need to do to get outside my own head, and the things I love to do that… don’t engage my mind as much. About work– the day job and the author job. How one sometimes zaps me of energy for the other. About freedom. About traveling and new places and new things, and living somewhere new. I want to do it someday. Someday when I manage to make writing a full time gig. About change. Sometimes I feel stagnant. And then I look at the things I want to do– live somewhere totally new? Start over somewhere where I’ll have to make new friends? I’m shy. And I never […]

TWO Cover Reveals! One Song Away by Molli Moran and One Dream Only by Elodie Nowodazkij

Eeeeeeep! Today, two dear author friends BOTH are revealing their covers and I’m SO pleased to be able to be a part of it. First up is Molli Moran with ONE SONG AWAY.  She needs a fill-in boyfriend. He needs a favor. It’s the perfect, no-strings arrangement — until they both realize it’s too real… Sophie-Claire Wright’s life is like a bad country song on repeat. She keeps running into her cheating ex, her songwriting career isn’t taking off, and to make matters worse, her roommate just kicked her out of their apartment. With nothing to lose, she decides to do the one thing she said she’d never do: she moves back home. She left her small Southern town with big dreams, but now she’s going home with empty pockets. Life moves at a slower pace in Sophie’s blink-and-you’ll-miss-it hometown, but her […]

End of the month check-in!

End of the month check-in!

For a birthday gift, I wanted to give myself two finished drafts. So… How did I do? 2 drafts. HA! That didn’t exactly happen. But, I’m very pleased with my progress. I think that’s the important thing with setting crazy goals: even if you don’t completely achieve them, you will probably make significant progress. Here is the thing: the Riot of Storm and Smoke draft isn’t complete. But for my purposes… it is. I’ve figured out the plot. The scenes that need to be added in and the ones that need to be subtracted. This means that I get to dive into my favorite part of the process: revisions. I get to take things out, bulk scenes up, add in forshadowing. First revisions are where I finally let myself go and tinker with the prose of my story. When those things are added, I’ll patch up […]

August Goals

August Goals

My birthday is August 29th, and I really want to give myself a couple of presents this year! As this day job’s “new” status fades, I’m finding myself better at balancing things again. Don’t get me wrong– I’m still WAY busy, but I’m adapting to things, which means I’m a little less exhausted, and that I’m once again finding ways to squeeze author business into my spare time (lunch hours, right before bed, weekend, et cetera). And because I can get stuff accomplished again, I’m setting myself some goals. The first three are big ones:  1) Finish this draft of Riot of Storm and Smoke. I’ve been saying it for ages, but it MUST happen this month if I want to meet my self-imposed publication month (December). Elsewise, I’m looking at pushing back my date and I HATE that idea. 2) Do […]
